Johannesburg - Utility Eskom will resume construction of its Medupi power station in the country's Limpopo province after a cholera scare, spokesperson Fani Zulu said on Sunday.

Zulu said 61 workers taken ill since on Thursday with cholera-like symptoms were getting better and most would return to work on Monday.

No fresh cases of sickness had been reported, he added.

"We are comfortable that we will be able to reopen the construction site tomorrow and most of the sick are getting stronger and should be able to return to work," Zulu told Reuters.

If confirmed as cholera, it would be the first sign that the disease which has killed more than 1 800 people in neighbouring Zimbabwe and worsened a humanitarian crisis there was affecting South Africa's economy.

Limpopo province, on the Zimbabwean border, has so far recorded 1 634 cases of cholera, according to the department of health.

Medupi, a project which employs some 3 000 workers, is seen as vital to easing power shortages that have hit major industries in South Africa, including mining.
