Johannesburg - Textile company Da Gama will retrench 761 workers - 60% of its work force, the Dispatch Online reported on Friday.

The company, known for producing the "Shweshwe" print, made the announcement in a statement on Thursday, blaming higher operational costs and cheap foreign imports.

The South African Clothing and Textile  Workers' Union (Sactwu) said it was shocked by the news and was planning to take the matter
to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

“We were not expecting this kind of retrenchment. There was no indication from the employer that they were running at a loss which
dates back to 2007,” said Sactwu Border Kei branch secretary Lawrence Faku.

In 2004, the company retrenched about 1000 workers.

In July this year, it closed down its East London branch, leaving 100 employees jobless.
