Cape Town - Vodacom on Tuesday announced the launch of a credit card to its customers, expanding its offerings beyond that of pure telecommunication services.

The Vodacom Credit Card will be issued under license of FirstRand Bank and backed by Visa - enabling Vodacom credit card holders to use their credit card anywhere in the world.

The Vodacom Credit Card, to be launched in November, will offer Vodacom contract- and top-up customers access to "responsible credit with a wide range of lifestyle rewards and benefits", SA's leading cellular network said in a statement.

Shameel Joosub, MD of Vodacom SA, says in designing the credit programme, the firm took cognisance of the current credit situation in the country and as such have opted not to offer customers credit for the sake of it.

"Instead we are providing creditworthy customers with special offers and discounts on items they would normally have purchased thereby enabling them to save money."

Perks will include benefits and rewards in the areas of travel, leisure, safety & security, education and Vodacom products and services. Card holders will also be eligible for discounts at major retailers.
