Chrome miners declare 'force majeure'

Johannesburg - The Xstrata-Merafe Chrome Venture has declared a "force majeure" to its ferrochrome customers due to the strike at transport parastatal Transnet.

"Developments on the strike will be constantly monitored and a full assessment of the impact of the strike on the supply of ferrochrome can only be completed once the level of participation becomes clear," JSE-listed Merafe said in a statement on Thursday.

A "force majeure" is a standard clause found in supply contracts, exempting contracting parties from fulfilling their contractual obligations for causes that could not be anticipated and/or are beyond their control.
