Cell C launches 4GS network in Cape Town

Johannesburg – South Africa's third mobile operator Cell C on Thursday announced the launch of its HSPA+ 900 Network in a fourth city, Cape Town.

It follows launches in Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein and East London, and represents the biggest city to date to be included in Cell C's 4GS network rollout, with the group citing average speeds of between 4-7 Mbps for the Mother City.

Cell C CEO Lars P Reichelt said: "Cell C's 4GS network has come to the Mother City covering 94% of the population with average speeds of between 4-7 Mbps and the best broadband pricing in South Africa."

He described the Cape Town launch as the most challenging step in the company's network rollout plans thus far. "Cape Town is undoubtedly South Africa's most iconic city and a
world class city that, from today, also has world class wireless data speeds and world class prices."

Reichelt said the first phase provides speed cover "from Simon's Town to Gordons Bay, from Bloubergstrand to Kraaifontein, from Green Point to Hout Bay, ie round about 94% of Cape Town's population".

Cell C said it anticipates the second phase to be completed by the end of 2010, which would provide 100% population coverage in the city and surrounding areas.

"Cape Town is a leading commercial city, not only from a South African perspective, but from an international perspective," commented Reichelt.

"The fact that Cell C can now offer a world-class wireless network infrastructure just adds to its attractiveness as a leading destination and location."

The high-speed network, dubbed 4GS - 4 Great Speed and 4 Great Service - uses Multi Standard Radio (MSR) technology to support the HSPA+ 900 MHz network.

The first phase of the 4GS network rollout, set for completion by the end of 2010, will cover about 34% of the South African population, with the network being launched on a city-by-city basis.

The mobile operator said it would continue to expand its network rollout and aims to cover 67% of the population by mid-2011.
