Oak Brook, Illinois-based McDonald's says net income rose to $1.19bn, or $1.05 per share, from $1.07bn, or 89c per share. Thomson Reuters says analysts expected 98c per share.
Revenue grew 6% to $6.27bn from $5.9bn. Analysts expected $6.18bn.
Global same-store sales jumped 7.1% while US same-store sales rose 4.7%. Same-store sales represent sales at locations open at least a year.
Fast-food sales have been holding up well despite the economic downturn because the chains offer lower prices than other sit-down restaurants.
