Cape Town - Mohammed (Mo) Kajee, who left empowerment group Sekunjalo in 2003 to pursue a career at fishing giant Irvin & Johnson, has returned to his roots.

On Friday morning Sekunjalo announced the appointment of Kajee as an executive director of Sekunjalo. Kajee will become the COO (chief operating officer) at Sekunjalo.

Kajee's return to Sekunjalo is somewhat surprising after a 15-month spell as MD of I&J.

Sekunjalo deputy CEO Norman Noland said he was delighted that Kajee had approached the company with an offer to return.

"We had no hesitation in welcoming Mo with open arms. He is a highly talented businessman with a proven track record in a number of industries and sectors. He is ideally placed to assist me in executing the strategy of Sekunjalo to build a viable and sustainable BEE conglomerate."

Kajee said his desire to return to Sekunjalo was motivated by his passion for building capacity in the empowerment arena.

He said that during the period away from the group he realised that Sekunjalo was clearly a leader and pioneer in empowerment.

"There is no doubting this company's dedication and commitment to broad-based empowerment. I want to be a part of that again."

Kajee, after a lengthy stint in the oil sector, joined Sekunjalo in the late nineties as a founder member, and was appointed as FD. Later Kajee became MD of Premier Fishing, Sekunjalo's biggest operating subsidiary.
