Pretoria – The South African Pork Producer’s Association (Sappo) announced that Allan Immelman will take over as CEO from Simon Streicher, who is retiring after serving the organisation for 17 years.
“We are extremely excited about Allan’s appointment and believe his skills and experience will be invaluable to our success going forward," said Sappo chairperson James Jenkinson.
"Apart from this he has a personal investment in a mixed farming operation in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands which includes a 230 sow piggery, 40 000 layers, and approximately 200 head of cattle and feed crops. This, combined with his business expertise, made him the natural choice to succeed Mr Streicher,” he added.
The appointment of Immelman is with effect from January 1 2017.
Immelman’s experience includes working for Chicago-based American holding company Arthur Anderson and Associates, Anglo American, Liberty Life and Deloitte among others.
He has consulted and advised extensively on treasury and banking operations, risk management, regulation and financial disclosure to banks and corporations in the United States, the United Kingdom, Africa, Europe and Asia.
In 2002 Immelman was appointed to lead the investigation into, and lead evidence on, financial market participants to assist the South African Presidential Commission of Enquiry into establishing causes behind the rapid depreciation of the rand.
Immelman, who will return to South Africa in December, holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Business Administration as well as a Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Finance and Business Administration from the University of Natal.
Sappo, which serves a group responsible for the slaughtering of 2.8 million pigs annually, is recognised by the government and other agricultural role-players as the mouthpiece for pork producers.
The organisation serves about 110 400 sows owned by approximately 230 pig farmers, six stud breeders and 153 registered pig abattoirs.
