Johannesburg - A record R22.3m was raised at the Cape Wine Auction held on Saturday.
The auction, sponsored by Nedbank Private Wealth, was held at Anthonij Rupert Wyne Estate. The R22.3m surpassed the target organiser’s set at R15m.
“We set out aiming to raise R15m this year but the final amount has literally left everyone speechless,” said director Darielle Robertson.
All proceeds raised at the auction, with no deduction, will be allocated to 22 beneficiaries who are actively involved in the Winelands in offering education, meals, after care, counselling services, career placements and training for youth.
The beneficiaries include the Pebbles Project, MAD Leadership Foundation, the Click Foundation, Pinotage Youth Development, Wine Training SA, the Lunch Box Fund and Sparks School International, among others.
This is the fourth auction, the first being established in 2014. The three previous auctions collectively raised R31m.
“We believe that our guests come back every year not only for the auction experience but because they know that they are supporting an initiative that is making a real difference in breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering children with education and the chance towards a bright future,” said Robertson.
Among the prizes on auction included travel opportunities and limited edition wines. A trip to Napa Valley, California raised R3m, the highest bid paid in the history of the auction’s existence.
The Lionel and Anton Smit collaborative sculpture, which was created especially for the auction took R1.2m. The sculpture is three metres tall. The bid included a wine and dining experience at Idiom Fine Dining Restaurant and Wine Estate.
