Cape Town - Fin24 journalist Carin Smith has won the 2013 Izethelo award for outstanding journalism on the fruit industry in the print media.
Winners in the various categories of the annual award by the deciduous fruit industry and Agricultural Research Council were announced at a gala event held in the Cape Sun Hotel.
Smith received the award for her insightful reporting on the economic impact of the farmworker strikes in the Boland in 2012. The articles were published while she was part of the Sake24 team.
Percivale Young and Anthony van der Merwe of eNuus won the journalism award for electronic media.
Gys du Toit of the Dutoit Group, a big supplier of fruit and vegetables situated near Ceres, was honoured as industry forerunner of the year.
Warren Bam, who grows organic grapes and blueberries on the Lushof farm near the town of Saron, was honoured as novice of the year in the fruit industry and Jurie Muller of Lakenvlei farm near Ceres won the award for a farmworker in a managerial position.
Leandre Opperman of the Morestêr farm won the decidious fruit industry's farmworker of the year award.
The award for research went to Dr Martin Taylor of ExperiCo.
