After an electricity power failure on the first night, Western Cape premier Helen Zille brought a dossier of the report on the incident, trying to make light of the situation. She also brought her dog to the stage, to hit back at a Loerie-award winning advert campaign for the NSPCA, that tried to push politicians to include animal welfare in their campaign message.

MC Vlismas entered the hall on the throne from series Game of Thrones, no doubt a set piece provided by DStv, a major sponsor of the event. Zille also had a moment in the throne. He was dressed in a yellow factory suit as Breaking Bad, upping his antics to new levels.

The big winner for the second evening was Ogilvy & Mather Johannesburg for Lucozade’s “Give me strength” radio commercial. It joined three others, who won the previous evening.

Dlanga’s winning ways for Coca-Cola’s campaign, a rainbow for a Rainbow Nation, meant he needed a team to cart away the Loeries his team won.

Hall of Fame

The Loeries Hall of Fame also received a new member. Velocity director and founding partner Keith Rose was inducted into the society of individuals who helped put the industry on the global map. He joined Graham Warsop, John Hunt, Robyn Putter, Nkwenkwe Nkomo and Mike Schalit on the roster of those individuals who have helped build the industry into what it is today.

"It has been said that mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself, but talent instantly recognises genius,” said Nicola Valentine, executive producer at Velocity. “Keith has continued to inspire, re-invent, challenge and surprise us with his limitless creativity and tenacious dedication to our industry.”

Velocity is a production company that has consistently featured in global production rankings including the Palme d’Or, the Gunn Report and other production rankings consistently. “Keith has a reputation for being obsessive about his craft and for keeping everyone creatively honest,” the Loeries said.

“Most importantly, he pushes for the essence of the idea, and has a unique ability to know in advance whether it will work visually. Keith’s chameleon-like ability has led him to be consistently on top of his game and shows no signs of waning.”

The Loeries is an annual recognition of the best work produced in the brand communication industry in our region – including the whole of Africa and the Middle East.

Of the 2 534 entries, 256 awards were handed out in an awards ceremony that ran over two days.
