The topic for our next issue of Collective Insight is “The Use and Abuse of Numbers in Investing”. Numbers are the lifeblood and the bane of the asset management industry. How they are used and more importantly misused is what sits at the core of our industry’s current credibility crisis. We are looking for articles that can address the topic from any number of different perspectives: for example, concrete examples of: where investors may be led to make bad decisions based on incorrectly presented or understood data; quantitative analyses or representations that may be flawed in their methodology; or research that may lead or misleading conclusions because of embedded data biases. Articles can either be directed to the lay investors who may be uninformed about these possible problems, or they can be directed to the professional who could benefit from understanding better modeling or research techniques. Authors wishing to contribute should vet their topic choices with us first to minimize overlap. Contact the Advisory Committee Convener, Anne Cabot-Alletzhauser, 011-575-4333, with your topic ideas. Articles (approximately 1200 words, plus illustrations) need to be submitted to matsholom@collectiveinsight.co.za by June 5th 2009.
