Cape Town - Bafana Bafana cannot exactly boast a display cabinet full of trophies, but Orange River Wine Cellars will see to it that South Africa's soccer team label graces the labels of some of its wine bottles.
This cellar has introduced a special range of wines named after the national soccer team. The wine is designed for the general public, soccer and wine lovers, and especially the emerging black wine consumer.
The Bafana Bafana range comprises five different wines - namely white, red, rosé, sparkling white and sparkling rosé, bottled under the Bafana Bafana label and the only range licensed by the South African Football Association (Safa).
Orange River Wine Cellars is situated in Upington in the Northern Cape and the Bafana Bafana wines are a joint venture with Afriwines, which negotiated the official licence rights.
Orange River Wine Cellars' marketing manager Koos Visser says now is the appropriate time to introduce a new generation of consumer to wine, since in the coming year South Africa will be exposed to soccer to the point of it becoming a national obsession.
The wines have been specifically prepared to cater for the tastes of this specific market. Visser describes them as fresh and fruity wines without a harsh tannin flavour, which would scare off many consumers.
The wines also have a lower alcohol content, promoting Bafana Bafana wines' commitment to responsible alcohol use.
