Cape Town - Suppliers of services and goods to the Western Cape government will need to consider greener options if they wish to do business.

The Western Cape is the first province to create a green policy for supply and procurement services, designed to promote eco-friendly practices.

This is in line with the 2Wise2Waste programme of the provincial department of environmental affairs and development.

The Green Paper on the environmentally friendly supply and procurement of services and goods for the provincial government specifies, among other things, that environmental criteria in supply management, procurement management, logistical planning and turnover management need to be included.

Departmental spokesperson Aziel Gangerdine said this will mean that the Western Cape government can approve both specifications and contracts based on these guidelines.

The public will be able to submit inputs to the paper before its submission to the provincial cabinet.
