Cape Town - Thehere is a significant disconnect between salaries paid to graduates of technical colleges and those paid to holders of university or post-graduate degrees, according to Careers24.com's Salary Survey 2007.

Specifically, employees with post-graduate degrees command an average annual salary that is some 50% more than the average base, confirms Geoff Cohen, General Manager of Careers24.com.

This translates to an average salary of R27 500 per month for employees with a post-graduate degree, compared to an average of R18 000 for all respondents across industries. By contrast, degreed staff receive 15% more than the average, or R20 800.

While still earning substantially higher than the mean, university graduates make significantly less than post-graduates. And, when it comes to employees possessing a technikon degree or diploma, the third-highest-paid educational category, their average pay packet comes in well below the sample average, at R16 700.

"This points to a very strong demand for post-graduate qualifications in the current economy," says Cohen. "It indicates that however dearly it costs to study for years on end, it clearly pays to spend on an education beyond an under-graduate degree or diploma."

The results of the survey indicate that, in general there is a particular bias by employers to more academic qualifications. This reflects South Africa's transition from an economy largely based on manufacturing and production to one based on services.
