Johannesburg - Public sector unions said on Friday that they plan to take the government's latest wage offer to their members - an indication that the revised wage proposal signified "slight progress".
On Thursday, the government tabled yet another new offer, this time increasing the housing allowance to R700 from R630. The wage increase remained at 7%.
Public service unions affiliated to trade federation Cosatu and the Independent Labour Caucus (ILC) said in a joint statement that they recognised the "slight progress" made and will now take the revised offer to their respective members for consultation from Friday until Monday.
The unions said: "Our members are the ones who will give a mandate on these negotiations."
The unions are demanding an 8.6% wage hike with a housing allowance increase from the original R500 to R1 000.
Cosatu-affiliated unions and the ILC said they recognised the latest offer, but "still feel it is a long way from our initial demands".
The public service unions and the government met late on Thursday in an attempt to settle the wage dispute that threatens to change gear into a full-blown strike.
