Johannesburg - Cosatu on Thursday called on the Public Service and Administration Minister,
Richard Baloyi, to "move decisively to address the demands of the public sector unions" in order to avoid a looming strike.
Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven warned that the planned strike "could have a profound impact on our country next week".
"While we as the leadership of the federation are willing to mediate, this must be based on a real and serious movement on his part," Craven said.
The National Union of Mineworkers (Num) also said it was seriously concerned about the impasse on wages between the state and the public sector unions at the Public Sector Coordinating Bargaining Chamber (PSCBC).
Frans Baleni, general secretary of Num, said the union calls on the state as an employer to "seriously review" its position and accommodate the demands of "the poorly paid civil servants".
"We believe the parties are not far from each other on wages and that a resolution could still be found," Baleni said.
"For workers to be able to deliver quality public services there is a need to look at their morale and to make proper interventions."
