Johannesburg - The National Union of Metal Workers of SA (Numsa) announced on Monday its members working in the tyre and rubber industry downed tools from today.

Workers in the rest of the motor industry will join an indefinite strike from Wednesday.

Numsa represents 70 000 employees working in the motor industry, comprising garages, components and workshops.

Numsa spokesperson Castro Ngobese said the industrial action in the tyre and rubber industry will "go on until we reach an agreement".

The companies involved are tyre makers Dunlop, Bridgestone and Continental.

The union is demanding a 15% wage hike, while employers are offering 6.6%.

Regarding forthcoming strikes, Numsa has said it plans to serve a 48-hour notice of strike to Retailers Motor Industry (RMI) and Fuel Retailers Association (FRA) on August 28 and start the industrial action on Wednesday.
