Johannesburg - The tourism ministry and Tourism Business Council of SA (TBCSA) will conduct a survey on the state of transformation in the tourism industry, the department said on Tuesday.
"The results of the survey will be released by February 2011 and will show how businesses in the tourism sector have responded to black economic empowerment," the department said in a statement.
It said the tourism sector had been accused of lagging behind on the transformation front.
"The National Tourism Sector Strategy requires that the sector should achieve a 70% target by 2014."
The department wanted to have a tool to measure how the tourism industry had implemented broad-based black economic empowerment.
The survey will conducted in November and December this year.
"Transformation in the tourism sector is said to be moving at a slow pace and the transformation of the sector will contribute to the development of our economy and alleviate poverty," said the department.
