Johannesburg - The Sishen-Saldanha railway line has been reopened for traffic after a train derailed.
Spokesperson Sandile Simelane said the line was opened at 06:00, after being closed on July 22 when a loaded iron ore train derailed outside Vredendal.
Johannesburg - The Sishen-Saldanha railway line was opened for traffic on Wednesday, Transnet Freight Rail said.
Spokesperson Sandile Simelane said the line was opened at 06:00, after being closed on July 22 when a loaded iron ore train derailed outside Vredendal.
"There were no injuries or fatalities. Of the 342 wagons, 107 wagons derailed. Two locomotives derailed and were seriously damaged, one diesel and one electrical locomotive." he said.
He said there was also extensive damage to the overhead track equipment, rail track, bridge and rolling stock.
"Almost all the iron ore that spilled in the dry river bed below the bridge on which the train partially derailed has been removed."
He said although the iron ore was a non-toxic metal, officials from the department of environmental affairs were working together with Transnet Freight Rail officials on a rehabilitation programme for the site.
