Johannesburg - Silicon Cape, a technology incubation and venture capital initiative, was launched in Cape Town on Thursday.

The project is the brainchild of Justin Stanford, head of venture capital firm 4Di Capital, and technology entrepreneur Vinny Lingham, who have also received buy-in from various business heavyweights.

According to Stanford and Lingham, Silicon Cape is an important initiative for the sector as it brings increased structure to the venture capital market and will allow for closer collaboration between investors and innovators.

On Thursday morning, the event's "#SiliconCape" ranked among the most popular trend phrases on microblogging service Twitter, making it one of the most widely used in the world at the moment.
