Pretoria - The department of water affairs on Tuesday said that two senior officials had been suspended, while illegal procurement practices are under investigation.
Chief financial officer Onesmus Ayaya and deputy director general for corporate services Nobubele Ngele, who was also the acting director general, have been placed on precautionary suspension.
The department's director general
Pam Yako was suspended in July 2009, amid claims of financial irregularity and maladministration.
Yako is challenging her suspension in the labour court.
The department said the auditor general completed an investigation in May 2010. This found that certain officials, including the two mentioned above, were "implicated in several breaches of procurement procedures".
"In a separate investigation, the public service commission is also finalising its process wherein the two individuals have also been implicated in further but separate allegations of procurement malpractice," the department said.
It said the suspensions were necessary "given the seriousness of the allegations", but that the two are not guilty of any wrongdoing.
The department also said that Deputy Minister
Rejoice Mabudafhasi remained in her post and was not removed in President
Jacob Zuma's cabinet reshuffle.
