Johannesburg - Seacom, the privately-funded east African coast undersea cable project which will go some way to solving expensive international bandwidth issues in South Africa, has added two senior members to its management team.
Seacom announced on Thursday morning that it had appointed Craig Wilson as the chief financial officer and Jean-Louis Parmentier as the chief operating officer, effective from May 1 and June 1 this year respectively.
Chairperson Brian Herlihy said in a statement: "With less than twelve months to commissioning date, Craig and Jean-Louis add critical mass to Seacom's operational readiness. Their extensive African experience in their respective fields will be highly beneficial to our operations and complement our vision of becoming a real and tangible partner to bandwidth hungry African economies."
Wilson is a chartered accountant who was with Standard Chartered associate company First Africa and Nedbank Capital before that.
Parmentier is a civil engineer specialising in telecommunications, who was previously the CEO of two Telecel International affiliates, Afrilink and M-Link.
Both have experience across geographies and regulatory environments, which should come in handy on a multi-country project such as Seacom.
Herlihy said at a previous presentation that once it became operation in June 2009, international leased backhaul bandwidth prices would drop by more than 80%.
The cable is due to come on stream in 2009.
