Cape Town - A massive solar water heating system for the Legacy Da Vinci hotel on Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton has just been announced.
The 117 solar panels will deliver hot water to the 138 rooms in the luxury hotel, which is due to open its doors on May 1.
The system is able to preheat 30 000 litres of water and is expected to reduce the hotel's electricity bill by at least 60% a year.
The Legacy Hotel Group appointed Kayema Energy Solutions as its partner in developing and installing the solar system.
Roberto Rosa, the hotel's general manager, says other measures to save electricity were also included in the hotel's design.
These include LED lighting in public areas, guest cards that switch room lights off when rooms are empty, and time switches for certain lights in the basement parking area.
