Cape Town - The Corex furnace at ArcelorMittal's Saldanha steel plant would be out of commission for 10 to 15 days following this week's accident at the facility, the company said on Wednesday.

Beyond the time taken to repair the furnace it will also take a few days to ramp up the furnace to its previous production levels.

The company confirmed that Tuesday's incident, in which no-one was injured, was caused by leakage of liquid iron at an "emergency tap hole".

The iron came into contact with cooling-water pipes causing a number of explosions and a cloud of steam.

It said Saldanha's normal steel capacity was about 100 000 tonnes a month, but the plant had been operating at 60% to 65% percent levels.

As far as possible, Saldanha sales orders would be placed with ArcelorMittal's Vanderbijlpark plant and other sites in the global ArcelorMittal group.
