Cape Town - Categories of special work permits for which foreigners with skills needed in South Africa may apply are to be unveiled on Friday, the government announced.
Professional categories and occupational classes in terms of which such quota work permits may be issued have been determined, and are to appear in the Government Gazette on Friday, Public Service and Administration Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi said on Tuesday.
"Foreign nationals who meet the requirements for these permits may apply at a foreign mission abroad or at an office of the department of home affairs in South Africa," she told reporters at parliament.
This included foreigners already residing in South Africa and political refugees.
The quotas were determined in consultation with the ministers of trade and industry and labour.
It makes it easier for the holders of certain skills or qualifications to come to South Africa, and may be issued to an applicant even before he or she has secured employment in the country.
The publication of the quotas on Friday would include a list of requirements related to work experience and the status of qualifications.
The department would also publish regulations on Friday to determine the yearly limits of available permanent residence permits.
To qualify, an applicant must have received an offer of permanent employment in South Africa.
The job must have been advertised, and no suitably qualified South African or permanent resident was available to fill it.
