Cape Town - A R20m furniture "incubation" centre has been launched in Mthatha by Mandisi Mpahlwa, the minister of trade & industry.
Nineteen local learners completed training in wood machining and
upholstery and have established five small businesses after completing the programme.
Their businesses are currently undergoing incubation at the centre.
Speaking at the launch, Mpahlwa said business incubation is one of the many and important instruments that government uses to tackle poverty and unemployment.
"This launch is an important milestone and achievement in support of the National Industrial Policy Framework, adopted in 2007 to set government's approach to industrialisation," he said. "Indeed, this launch, then gives us the proof that with realistic ambition, good strategy and the requisite resources, we are capable of promoting the further industrialisation of our
economy."
