SA firms keen on Mozambican workers

Maputo - South Africa recruited more than 15 000 Mozambican migrant labourers in the first semester of 2010, the Mozambican labour ministry said on Wednesday.

The total number of 15 055 workers went down from the 16 769 recorded in the same period last year, a report from the Ministry's six-monthly co-ordinating meeting stated.

The contracts of 2 000 Mozambicans were renewed to work on South African farms in Limpopo, Eastern and Western Cape provinces, state newspaper Noticias reported.

At least 500 were recruited by the ZZ2 farming conglomerate, which employs the most Mozambicans in the agricultural sector.

Around 1 200 Mozambicans work on its Tzaneen farms. The conglomerate produces various fruit, vegetables and beef.

Authorities acknowledged that many Mozambicans work illegally in South Africa, most in the agricultural sector, the newspaper reported. Just over 250 were legalised.

Another 45 000 Mozambican migrants work in South African mines, of which Impala Platinum in Rustenburg employs 2 000.
