Johannesburg - The Milk Producers' Organisation (MPO) said on Friday that local dairy products are safe and comply with high standards.

"Locally produced dairy products comply with high standards and I encourage South African consumers to fully support local dairy products," said MPO Managing Director, Etienne Terre'Blanché."

Terre'Blanché also said the MPO has welcomed the health department's statement that all imported Chinese products containing dairy would be seized with immediate effect.

"The MPO noted with concern the effect of the dairy scandal in China, where thousands of babies have been hospitalised and at least four have died. The babies drank infant milk formula to which melamine was added," said Terre'Blanché.

He added that the MPO is constantly monitoring dairy imports and regularly identifies problems with the quality of imported dairy products.

Many of these products do not comply with South African legislation regarding packaging and ingredients. In many instances, state mechanisms are inadequate in the monitoring of imported products he noted.

Terre'Blanché however warned consumers to still use discretion when buying imported products.

Melamine is rich in nitrogen and was apparently added to the formula in order to foil the standard tests for protein content. Melamine, which is usually used in the production of plastic and glue, can cover up the illegal addition of water to milk, the MPO said.
