Britain fell deeper into recession than initially thought in the first quarter of 2012, upping chances that the central bank could inject more stimulus into the economy.
Johannesburg - Crude steel production in South Africa fell 22% year-on-year in April to an estimated 580 000 metric tons from 744 000 metric tons in April last year, the World Steel Association reported on Wednesday.
Releasing crude steel data for April, the association said production out of South Africa for the first four months of 2009 was down 25.7% to 2.20 million metric tons from 2.96 million metric tons in the first four months of 2008.
African production dropped 19.8% to 1.24 million metric tons in April and 23.8% or 4.68 million metric tons for the first four months of this year.
World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association was 89 million metric tons in April - 23.6% lower than in April 2008.
Production was lower across all regions except the Middle East, which reported a fractional increase in output.
The largest fall came from Australia, where production dived 58.1% year-on-year.
Other steep falls were seen in North America, where output declined by 49%, and the European Union, where production was down 48.6%.
China's crude steel production for April 2009 was 43.4 million metric tons, showing a decline 3.9% from April 2008 while Japan produced 5.7 million metric tons of crude steel in April 2009, down by 43.6% compared with the same month last year.
World crude steel production for the first four months of 2009 was 354 million metric tons, a 22.7% decrease over the same period of 2008.
