Pretoria - South Africa's genetically modified (GM) crop area rose slightly to 1.81m hectares in the 2008/09 season from 1.8m the previous season, farm union GrainSA said on Wednesday.
GrainSA chief executive Kobus Laubscher said 1.617n ha of the total was the staple maize, while genetically modified soya was produced on 184 000 ha and cotton on 12 000 ha.
"In 2008, genetically modified maize plantings increased by 10 000 hectares despite an almost 8% decline in commercial maize area planted; soyabeans increased by 40 000 hectares and cotton by 2 000 hectares," Laubscher said.
South Africa is Africa's sole producer of commercialised GM crops and is the world's eighth largest producer of GM crops.
The country has experienced continued growth in its GM crop area since it began production in 1998.
