Maputo - An agreement between Transnet and its Mozambican counterpart to improve the movement of goods between the two countries could be signed by September next year, officials said on Tuesday.

"In the last two months we started to involve the national department of transport to push Transnet to agreement," Blessing Manale, deputy director of the Maputo Development Corridor, told Sapa in an interview.

The corridor is an initiative of the Mpumalanga provincial government.

"By September next year we expect to have signed an agreement and this will reduce the time in the movement of goods."

The negotiations would result in either Transnet or Caminho de Ferro de Mocambique transporting goods to and from the port of Maputo directly, Currently the companies exchanged transportation of the goods at Komatipoort, 10km inside South Africa.

The talks started three years ago.

Manale added that authorities in the Maputo Corridor were considering developing rail transport due to the increased volume of cargo being moved through Maputo. Currently the bulk of South African imports and exports was moved by road to and from Maputo.
