Johannesburg - Key players in the public sector wage dispute were to meet on Monday afternoon in a renewed effort to bring a crippling national strike to an end.
"The hope is expressed that a reasonable offer will be made to enable the ILC (Independent Labour Caucus) to take it back to their members and possibly obtain a mandate with regard to the way ahead," said ILC chairperson Chris Klopper.
He said the ILC was "grateful to announce that it seems as if sanity has at long last prevailed".
Klopper said Public Service and Administration Minister Richard Baloyi had requested a meeting.
"The minister (of the Department of Public Service and Administration) has requested that a special meeting of the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) must take place this afternoon (Monday) at 18:00," said Klopper.
He hoped the meeting would end with an offer that amounted to an "improvement of conditions of service" and that this would be an offer good enough to "convince workers... that the strike can be called off".
A meeting with Baloyi would take place at the Education Labour Relations Council at 16:00, the ILC would meet with the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) at 17:00, and would meet with the PSCBC at 18:00.
The government could not be reached to confirm the information released by the ILC.
