Johannesburg - Construction workers who are gleefully looking forward to a six-week holiday during the World Cup soccer tournament are in for a nasty surprise.
On Wednesday Bernie Krone, chief executive of the civil engineering group Esorfranki, at the announcement of the group's annual results, said that construction workers involved in the Gauteng freeway improvement project are expecting a holiday for the duration of the tournament.
Parts of the work on these projects have to be suspended during the tournament in terms of an agreement with the South African National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral).
The contractors have known this from the outset and have planned to deploy their workers elsewhere. But these plans are apparently not to the liking of the workers and there is concern about possible strikes.
Krone says that it is totally impracticable to give some workers such a long holiday while those busy with other projects have to work. If the company has to dismiss all those who consider themselves entitled to a holiday it will do so.
