Johannesburg - Legislation should be in place by April next year to start
implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI), SABC radio
news reported on Monday.
Government is preparing legislation for submission to cabinet.
It was also preparing official documents to be released for
public debate and consideration, said deputy health minister Dr
Molefi Sefularo.
He was speaking at the annual conference of the Board of
Healthcare Funders in Sun City on Monday.
"Failure to conclude debates and implementation of the NHI
has led to a situation where medical aid benefits are shrinking and
no growth in membership of medical schemes.
"We are now faced with a situation where the private medical
schemes sector is unsustainable. The NHI seeks to change this model
so that the trend that is now there is abated and apprehended,"
said Sefularo.
