Port Elizabeth - Staffing and recruiting agencies are experiencing a decline of up to 50% in business as a result of fewer posts being advertised and filled in the economic downturn.

In addition, 50% to 75% more CVs are being received for positions, compared with a year ago, and databases swell daily as more retrenched workers visit staffing agencies, says Robin Flood, owner of The Labour Practice, which recruits and places staff countrywide.

According to Flood, many positions are being frozen in the manufacturing sector. In the past he would receive about 100 CVs for every 10 to 12 positions advertised by bulk email. This has now increased to 200 CVs in certain cases.

Roanne Wilson, branch manager of Drake International in Sandton, sees a strong inflow of CVs from people who have lost their jobs, with an increase in skilled people like technicians and engineers submitting their CVs and phoning in.

A few months ago electricians were scarce, but now many are on the market, declares Flood.

According to Mistral Janion, senior recruiting consultant at CR Solutions in Cape Town, the company has positions available in call centres and information networks, as well as for clerks. Wilson also notices a demand for sales staff.

According to Flood, it should be remembered that November to January are traditionally quiet recruiting periods. This is a good time for agencies to beef up their databases, because as soon as the economy improves companies will again appoint workers and look for the best candidates.
