Johannesburg - Government will soon begin a feasibility study for a high-speed train between Durban and Johannesburg.
It is estimated that the train could cost up to R530bn, have a top speed of 350km an hour, and will swallow up the 600km between the two cities in three hours and 30 minutes.
The department of transport says the project is still in its initial stage.
Sam Monareng, a spokesperson for the department, last week told Sake24 that the idea was still at a planning stage and the feasibility study would soon be undertaken.
The Passenger Rail Association (Prasa) will do the study.
Prasa chief executive Lucky Montana fortunately supports the proposed project. Montana says the train could reach speeds of 300km and 350km an hour.
It currently takes up to 10 hours to commute by train between the two cities.
Montana says the envisaged rail link will be financially viable only if the train transports goods as well as passengers.
