Johannesburg - As many as 6 000 workers plan halt work for a day at Harmony's Elandsrand mine in South Africa, the National Union of Mineworkers said Wednesday.
The day of mourning planned for Thursday following the death of a colleague follows a similar one-day work stoppage at DRDGold's Blyvooruitzicht mine Wednesday, the union said in an e-mailed statement.
It said a further 1 500 mineworkers at Redpath, a contractor attached to Aquarius Platinum in South Africa, will down tools on Friday after a worker was killed over the weekend.
The union, which said 120 workers have been killed in mining incidents since the start of the year, has threatened to stage one-day work stoppages to mourn colleagues following each fatality.
