Johannesburg - Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Rob Davies has appointed a new chairperson and new members to the National Lotteries Board.

In a statement on Monday, the department of trade and industry said the appointments would be for a period of five years with effect from December 2.

The term of the current board of the National Lotteries Board, chaired by Joe Foster, ended on December 2, the department said.

Dr Alfred Nevhutanda was appointed non-executive chairperson, the department said.

"Dr Nevhutanda is currently a member of the Arts and Culture Distribution Agency of the National Lotteries Board," the department said.

"He has in-depth understanding of and experience of the operations of the National Lotteries Board, as well as extensive experience in the public sector."

The department said advocate George Negota would serve a second term on the board.

"His appointment will ensure compliance with the legal requirement set in the Lotteries Act, 1997, for a legal practitioner to be appointed to the board."

Other appointments included chartered accountant Mathukana Mokoka and Obed Shabangu, who had extensive experience on boards and board-type committees, the department said.

Ndileka Loyilani, Govindasamy Reddy and Zodwa Ntuli were the other board appointments.

"The minister is confident that the new board will take forward measures to expedite processes relating to the distribution of funds to worthy causes so as to advance the development of our needy communities," the department said.

The board would also be responsible for the overseeing of the licensed national lottery operator, Gidani, and for advising the minister on matters relating to the national lottery.
