Johannesburg - The Chamber of Mines of SA is hoping the South African government will relax its attitude towards indiscriminate closure of mines in the event of an accident.

At present shafts are shut when accidents occur, particularly if there have been any fatalities. This results in production losses.

Commenting in a Fin24.com podcast, Chamber of Mines spokesperson Jabu Maphalala said there were signs of "more empathy" from government and labour.

"The spirit of those discussions are ongoing and they're more positive than anything we've seen before," he said.

Talks are facilitated by the global financial crisis, which is putting pressure on mining operators and making them reluctant to lose out on production.

Said Maphalala: "Different situations happen in different mines and we have to work together to minimise accidents." Universal punishment does not solve safety issues, he added.
