Johannesburg - Government and public sector trade unions are scheduled to meet on Wednesday evening in a bid to resolve the wage dispute and end the strike that has disrupted public schools and hospitals.

As part of the latest round of wage negotiations, the parties planned to meet at the Public Sector Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) this morning, but the meeting was postponed until 18:00 local time.

On Monday, the government tabled a revised offer, raising the wage increase to 7.5% from 7%, and boosting the housing allowance to R800 from R700.

Unions are demanding an 8.6% wage increase and a R1 000 housing allowance.

From Tuesday, public sector unions started consulting their members on the new offer. On Wednesday, unions - affiliates of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the Independent Labour Caucus (ILC) - met to discuss how the consultation process was proceeding.

Government's new offer came after President Jacob Zuma ordered public service ministers at the weekend to get back to the negotiation table.
