Cape Town - Despite heated denials two weeks ago, Reuben Riffel will now succeed Gordon Ramsay.

On October 1 South Africa's own celebrity chef, Riffel, is taking up the position that Ramsay previously occupied at the former Maze restaurant at the One&Only hotel on the Cape Town Waterfront.

Kerzner International, owner of the hotel, recently abruptly terminated its consultancy agreement with Gordon Ramsay Holdings (GRH), owing to alleged breach of contract.

The hotel has meanwhile itself run a restaurant on the premises.

It is called, simply, The Restaurant. Kerzner said he regarded Riffel, who in 2004 opened Reuben’s in Franschhoek, as the appropriate choice to impart South African flair to the restaurant.

When asked two weeks ago, Riffel told Sake24 that he was definitely not planning to take Ramsay’s place at the One&Only.

He decried reports that he was involved in negotiations in that regard and said he was happy to remain in Franschhoek and did not want to run the risk of  going “too big”.

According to a spokesperson for Ramsay, no summons has yet been received regarding the alleged breach of contract, for which no reasons have so far been disclosed.
