Uitenhage - German group Benteler Automotive, a manufacturer of chassis, dashboards and mudguards for the motor industry, is opening a R178m plant as a supplier in Uitenhage - close to the premises of Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA).

Chairperson Hubertus Benteler said that globally the company tries to build its factories near clients because of rising logistical and transport costs.

The factory in the Nelson Mandela Bay Logistics Park will occupy 20 000m². It will create 250 jobs and start production in July 2010. Construction of the plant began on October 1.

Initially the company will supply only to VWSA, but possibly later to other customers as well, said Benteler. The company has several business divisions and more than 70 years' experience in the motor manufacturing industry.

VWSA managing director Dave Powels said with Benteler practically on its doorstep, VWSA would more rapidly be able to reach its objective of boosting local content of its vehicles from the current 40%-odd to over 70%.
