Johannesburg - The improvement and upgrading of the Gauteng road network by the South African National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral) is almost 80% complete.
Alex van Niekerk, head of Sanral's Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), said most of the work was completed before the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
In the first phase of the GFIP 185km of roads was upgraded. This includes 34 interchanges, 20 of which have been completed. He said as soon as the soccer tournament was over, Sanral had tackled completion of the project.
Van Niekerk said the GFIP project's first phase is estimated to have cost about R21bn. Most roads have been widened by adding lanes. Some highways, including parts of the R21, the N1 in Pretoria, the N1 in Midrand and the N12 south of Johannesburg, still need an asphalt surface.
