Johannesburg - Nine freight inspectors at OR Tambo International Airport went on strike on Thursday, trade union Uasa said.

"This means that currently there is no one inspecting goods that are arriving into our country, or checking if they are safe," spokesperson William Seya said in a statement.

The inspectors were employed by Freight Surveillance International (SFI) - an affiliate of Check Port Security which was contracted to the Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa).

"We are meeting with Acsa on Friday to discuss picketing... we will not stop until demands are met."

Workers wanted a minimum wage of R5 500, after claiming to not have received salary increases for seven years. Average remuneration was currently R3 000 to R4 000 a month, Uasa said.

They were further worried about Unemployment Insurance Fund benefits.

"The workers, who are paid in cash by SFI, are concerned that the lower earnings reported to Sars result in them losing UIF benefits."

They wanted a provident fund, shift allowance and for SFI management to stop "intimidating" them.

"Since they received a certificate for a protected strike from the CCMA, the workers have received final warnings from management and there have been attempts to intimidate them regarding their union membership."

SFI was not immediately available for comment.
