Cape Town - Former civil servants who took voluntary severance packages and who have been precluded from re-entering the public service may soon be able to do just that.
The country's urgent skills shortage, especially in the civil service, has prompted a call to government by the Joint Initiative for Priority Skills Acquisition (Jipsa) to reverse regulations prohibiting those who took severance packages from being re-employed by the state.
During a briefing to parliament's labour proftolio committee, deputy director general in the presidency, Alan Hirsch, indicated that it will be considered.
"We definitely need to look at that. Maybe state that after a certain period people can come back."
The briefing to parliament made it clear that, aside from increasing the number of graduates universities and technikons were producing, other more immediate solutions had to be fast-tracked. These included doing more to attract South Africans living and working overseas back to South Africa, importing skills as well as enlisting the skills of retired professionals who were keen to work again.
The Development Bank of South Africa will soon launch a database of retired professionals so that South African companies can tap into it directly.
