Johannesburg - A construction company was attempting to obtain a court order to prevent all sporting events, including the World Cup, from being held at the Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria, SABC reported.

The HBC Construction company, formerly Homeless Building Construction, claimed the Tshwane Metro Council owed them over R28m for construction work to upgrade the stadium for the World Cup.

It asked the High Court in Pretoria to stop sporting events from being held at the stadium until the metro paid it the money owed.

SABC said the Tswane Metro Council denied the charge and accused the company of extortion.
