Johannesburg - Eskom workers will picket during lunchtime at Megawatt Park and other offices on Thursday to "remind" their employer that their wage demands are "still a reality", a union said.

"The purpose is to remind the electricity parastatal that the demand for 14% wage increase and the R5 000 housing allowance is still a reality," the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said in a statement.

"Thousands of members of the National Union of Mineworkers will today picket at lunchtime at Megawatt Park and all Eskom regional offices."

A dispute between Eskom and three trade unions over wage negotiations has been referred to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration after talks deadlocked.

Solidarity, NUM and the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) had been negotiating with the power utility over a housing subsidy and a wage increase since April.

Solidarity is demanding a 12% increase, the NUM and Numsa want a 14 percent hike. The unions also want a R5 000 housing subsidy for all employees.

"The National Union of Mineworkers and fellow trade unions Numsa and Solidarity lowered their demands to 14% and 12% respectively and Eskom remains steadfast on eight percent," said NUM.
