Johannesburg - Eskom tabled a revised offer to workers at a meeting with unions at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) on Monday night.
The parastatal electricity provider said in a statement it revised its offer to one comprising three elements.
The new offer consisted of an 8% across-the-board increase on basic salary, a 5.6% increase to key allowances and a R12 000 once-off payment per employee.
The R12 000 payment, which the company said would be ex-gratia (as a goodwill gesture), would be paid in two equal instalments, in July 2010 and July 2011.
"The ex-gratia payment is designed to facilitate the transition to a total cost to company pay structure which will include a housing benefit and the introduction of a defined contribution pension scheme as an option for existing employees," the utility said.
Eskom's human resources head Bhabhalazi Bulunga said the offer was "very reasonable" as it was well above the inflation rate.
"That is very generous in today's economic climate, and it comes on top of the other benefits our workers already enjoy," Bulunga said.
Eskom was in a meeting with the National Union of Mineworkers, National Union of Metal Workers SA and Solidarity at the CCMA on Monday evening in an attempt to ward off a possible strike during the World Cup.
The unions were demanding a 15% wage increase and R5 000 housing allowance. The meeting was expected to conclude later on Monday night.
