Johannesburg - Mediation to break a deadlock in Rand Water wage negotiations is
being sought, the South African Municipal Workers' Union's Gauteng
branch said on Wednesday.
"A dispute has been declared with the bargaining council... and
the parties are awaiting the conciliation date," the union said in
a statement.
It said the deadlock occurred during wage discussions at the
body's headquarters on Wednesday.
"The employer is offering eight percent, or R440, and the unions
demand 16%, or R3 150, whichever is greater," said Samwu.
The South African Local Government Bargaining Council has now
been approached for assistance.
Samwu said its members would hold a lunch-time picket on Monday
in support of its demands.
Rand Water spokesperson Gregg Mulzack was confident an amiable
agreement would he reached.
He said management took the salary negotiations "very seriously.
"Often when we have salary negotiations, the processes are very
robust and dynamic," he said but added that Rand Water was an
essential service provider and that a minimum service agreement was
in place with all Rand Water-affiliated unions.
According to this agreement, uninterrupted supply and
distribution of water had to be provided.
"We are confident...the affiliate unions will be mindful and
respectful of the minimum service agreement," he said.
